The Star of Canada, a general cargo steamer, was blown onto rocks on the Gisborne foreshore on 23 June 1912. The captain's cabin, chartroom and wheel-house were salvaged and Mr W. Good, a Gisborne jeweller, purchased the structure and moved it to a section beside his house at 274 Childers Road.
The structure, known as the ‘Star of Canada’, was originally occupied by Mrs L. Woodfield, Mr Good's daughter, who lived there for some years. On her death in 1983, Mrs Woodfield bequeathed the ‘Star of Canada’ to the city of Gisborne. In 1985 it was moved from Childers Road to its current site in Kelvin Park, behind the main museum buildings, and converted into a maritime museum.
The ‘Star of Canada’ has been recognised as a Category 2 Historic Place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The exhibition will include photographs of the ship’s grounding, the salvage operation, and subsequent use of the wheel-house structure as a private home and museum. Objects and archival material associated with the ‘Star of Canada’ will also be exhibited.
