Staglands Camp Fire Cooking – Rediscovering Bush Skills

As part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, Staglands Wildlife Reserve, are offering to give children a valuable history lesson – in the art of camp fire cooking! They will be participating in New Zealand’s largest culinary festival, ‘Wellington on a Plate’, and are running a series of camp cooking lessons between 11th and 26th August at the wildlife reserve.

Participants will rediscover the lost skill of cooking on an outdoor camp fire. They will learn how to build, light and look after a fire on which they will then cook their own delicious lunch (with mum or dad on hand to help out if needed!). There will be hot soup on tap for adults and maybe some unusual bush delicacies for our braver souls to taste!

The team at Staglands came up with the idea whilst reminiscing over the fun they had as kids cooking on a camp fire. “You forget with gas BBQ’s not many children get to cook on a fire. We all remembered the taste of smoky sausages, burnt on the outside and cold in the middle. It seemed an ideal family event for Wellington on a Plate,” said Darryl Ray, Reserve Manager. He will be in charge of showing the kids what to do and making sure they all end out with something tasty to eat!
