This is the third year that Northart has been a part of Auckland Council's Te Taumata Exhibition Series. 'Songs for Matariki' is a fresh look at the uniqueness of our time and this place through the eyes of four Māori artists in solo exhibitions across the Auckland region.

The exhibition by photographer John Miller opens at Northart on Sunday 15 July 4pm-6pm. Writing of the exhibition at Northart, curator of the 2012 series, Ngahiraka Mason notes the proverb, "Ka pai ki muri, ka pai ki mua - When all is well at the back, it follows that all will be well at the front".

She continues, "Photographer John Miller's Matariki project is an intimate behind-the-scenes study of the activities that go into producing a successful whanau or family meal. Using a digital camera set up in various parts of the wharekai kitchen, Miller adopts the 'long-take' technique used in filmmaking to produce detailed sequences of people making bread, trifles and soup, and preparing kaimoana, vegetables and meat for a birthday banquet."

There will also be a series of Matariki workshops for children while the exhibition is running - please check out Northart's Public Programmes page http://www.northart.co.nz/public/, or contact frances.atkins@northart.co.nz for more information, or you can phone the gallery on 09 480 9633.
