In 1964, Hone Tuwhare published his first book of poetry No Ordinary Sun. It sold an astounding 700 copies in ten days and was reprinted 13 times. He went on to become our best loved poet ever.
Last year saw the publication of Small Holes in the Silence: Collected Poems, showcasing Tuwhare’s achievement with 300 poems, 43 new Maori translations and 10 never-before-published pieces.
In this tribute to his genius, Poet Laureate Ian Wedde and New Zealand poets Jacq Carter, Anne Kennedy, Gregory O’Brien, Rob Tuwhare and Albert Wendt each present a poem of Tuwhare’s, one of their own and one from the collection of a co-presenter.
