The story:
Based on the 523rd story (Kusa Jathaka) in the Jathaka story series, the film portrays beautifully the defiance of Pabhavathi towards Kusa, once she discovers that he is not the handsome husband she imagines him to be, and how he wins her back through wisdom and prowess. Prince Kusa, the elder son of the emperor, and the heir to throne and expert of many fields, has been born with an ugly face. He sculpts a gold statue of a beautiful princess, and challenges his parents to find a girl of that beauty, if they want him to get married. After an extensive search over the whole empire, they find 'Pabawathie' a daughter of a local king, who matches the beauty of the gold stature.

Knowing that Paba would never like the face of Kusa, the mother queen of Kusa plans a bogus royal custom, for Paba not to see the face of her husband until she get conceived. But the secret gets exposed as both of them were inquisitive to see each other. Paba returns back to parents in anger.

Kusa who is in deep love with Paba by this time, disguises as a servant and hangs around Paba's palace. Knowing that Paba has returned home, seven other local kings declare war claiming Paba. The emperor orders seven kings to share Pabawathie after slicing her into seven pieces. All set for the execution. But Kusa rescues her at the last second and with a divine power, his ugly face changes into a handsome one.
