This exhibition by Sandra Meyst and Karen Elsworth represents an exciting move for both artists (better known for their sculpture) into the realm of painting as a means of artistic expression.
Sandra’s work is influenced by the tradition of abstract expressionism, with the use of a vibrant colour palette and abstracted forms created in an intuitive approach. Her large paintings are based on the influence of the very old trees of the district, and the strong feelings aroused from the destruction of the Mander Park trees, with consideration of the life-giving power of ancient trees and what they mean to people in a spiritual sense.
Karen’s work delves into the theme of multiple realities, with the concept of a multiple self existing within a chaotic modern life. Her series of paintings involve the use of texture and a limited colour palette, with mysterious figures and symbols incorporated into her work. The imagery of clowns and acrobats metaphorically describe the chaos of modern life.
