As Sāmoa celebrates 50 years of independence, here’s your chance to see visiting customary artists at work.

Two weavers from Savai‘i, ‘Aumala Folasa-Solo and Savelina Afa‘ese, show customary ‘ie toga (fine mat) techniques at the Weavers’ Studio area of our new exhibition Kahu Ora | Living Cloaks.

At Signs of the Nation, encounter a tatau (tattoo) artist, master carvers, and makers of sennit – a type of woven cord used throughout the Pacific.

The exchange programme aims to bring together Māori and Pasifika artists, recognise Sāmoa and New Zealand’s joint history, and support the future of Pacific arts in New Zealand.
