Tai chi, art, and the year of the dragon, these three complement and enhance each other. So as I started on this journey of self-discovery I tried to express in paint feelings aroused by this way of life. Tai chi is a lot like painting – you try to observe the world and one's outer surroundings, yet at the same time trust one's inner vision and intuition. You could use a blindfold to create art through the inner spirit (yin) which in turn can be absorbed through the eyes (yang).
By using art as a holistic medicine we can all benefit from the mystery of art, balancing ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually so a pathway to better health/better understanding/a relaxed body and mind sums up tai chi to me.
My exhibition is in the year of the dragon, I decided to incorporate this into the show adding a touch of Chinese astrology which is also about the life force – yin/yang energy and the five elements. The Chinese life cycle is as ancient as tai chi and the powerful, dynamic dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac. The dragon inspired wonder, confident and vibrant in personality and wins the attention and support of others with great ease. This all boils down to the most important lesion which is tai chi or any other discipline can teach us to lift the spirit and be happy—Robin Arnst.
