Photographer Wayne Barrar will provide some entertaining insight into the development of his Expanding Subterra exhibition, as well as presenting some of his earlier work and recent projects.

During his time working on the Expanding Subterra exhibition, he explored uncanny and forgotten spaces such as huge areas allocated to the storage of post-capitalist materials, such as digital and analogue archives, film stock and even nuclear waste. Using his works, Wayne Barrar discusses issues involving the politics of space and, in particular, access to these zones. He reveals how easy it is for individuals, governments and businesses to control, define and measure our sense of place.

For the last 30 years, Wayne Barrar, a leading figure in New Zealand photographic circles, has been challenging audiences to think about land use, place and borders. Having travelled through New Zealand, Australia, France and America since the mid-2000s, Barrar has been building up an archive of these often inaccessible, forgotten worlds that lie underground - the commercial, industrial and domestic.

Based in Wellington, Wayne Barrar is the Associate Professor at Massey University’s School of Fine Arts. His work has been widely exhibited in New Zealand and internationally.

Entry to this event is included with admission to Rotorua Museum, which is free for Rotorua residents with proof of residency.
