Athol McCredie, curator of the exhibition Brian Brake: Lens on the World (currently on show at Rotorua Museum) will give an illustrated talk on the work of Brian Brake (1927-1988), one of New Zealand’s best known photographers. Brake’s work has had a seminal influence on our photographers.
He first made his name as an international photojournalist in the 1950s and 1960s, photographing for picture magazines such as Life and Paris-Match. He is best known for his work of the monsoon rains in India in 1960. This photo essay included the widely reproduced Monsoon girl, an image of a young woman reacting with pleasure to the first rains on her face.
He was also known for the best-selling 1963 book (co-produced with writer Maurice Shadbolt), New Zealand, Gift of the Sea. In the 1980s his name became synonymous with images of taonga from the Te Māori exhibition.
In this talk Athol McCredie will trace the photographic journey of Brian Brake’s works and explore the themes that run through his photography. McCredie is currently the curator of photography at Te Papa and has been involved in photographry since the 1970s.
Entry to this event is included with admission to the Museum, which is free for Rotorua residents with proof of residency.
