About Stefan Cassomenos:
Melbourne pianist, conductor and composer Stefan Cassomenos studied at the University of Melbourne and the Australian National Academy of Music. His main piano teachers were Margarita Krupina and Stephen McIntyre. He has performed internationally since the age of ten, and performed the premiere of his own first piano concerto with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16. He has appeared as a soloist throughout Europe and Asia, and now gives regular solo recitals and concerto performances throughout Australia.

Stefan has appeared as a soloist in St Petersburg, Tallinn, Warsaw, Krakow, Athens, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, London, Bangkok, and Tokyo. His 2007 London debut was described, in a Musical Musical Opinion: John Amis, as ‘alive, passionate, and dramatic… as if the pianist’s life depended on it. This was a prodigious London debut by a formidable talent.’ He regularly performs concertos with orchestras, which have included the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Youth Philharmonic Melbourne, and several other youth and community orchestras.

Stefan has been composing since the age of seven, and his compositions have been performed by the Symphony Orchestras of Melbourne and Adelaide. Stefan has annually since 2010 been the Composer-in-Residence for Creative Universe’s Creative Innovation Conference. In 2010, he premiered his Third Piano Concerto at the Melbourne Recital Centre with musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music. He has recently been awarded the 2012 Lyrebird Music Society Commission to write a string quartet for the Curro Quartet. His compositions continue to be commissioned and performed regularly by a number of orchestras and chamber ensembles.

Stefan is also active as an Artistic Director and Conductor. He was the Artistic Director of the 2007 Melba Festival in the Yarra Valley, Guest Artistic Director of Melbourne’s Piano Landmarks festival 2009-10, Conductor of the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra 2010-11, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Chamber Strings of Melbourne for 2011, and founding director of Creativity Australia’s ‘Our Community Sings’ Choir for 2011. In 2011, Stefan completed several modules of the Symphony Australia Conductor Development Program, working closely with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, and Christopher Seaman.

Stefan is generously supported by Kawai Australia, Music Theatre Australia, the Youth Music Foundation of Australia and KBB Music in New Zealand.
