Letham Gallery presents their first exhibition of 2012, the stunning paintings of Penny Howard, opening Thursday 2nd February at 6pm.
Losing My Religion is inspired by Howard’s great, 3x grandmother, Te Kuri O Te Wao, who was a Maori princess and is said to be the first Maori woman to be converted to Catholicism in New Zealand. She was a seer and practised traditional Maori medicine, which falls under Maori religion. She eventually renounced the Catholic faith because the Catholics would not let her practice her Maori medicine.
Losing My Religion talks broadly about colonisation across the Pacific and the conversion of Pacific peoples to Catholicism and the losses that resulted.
Exhibition preview 2nd February, 6pm. Exhibition runs from 2nd - 14th February. See www.lethamgallery.co.nz for more details.
