What does it mean to be a Kiwi? What represents us, our national identity, our stories, the sum of us and our entirety?

Using garments and multimedia pieces Ciane Lawrey is exploring these questions from her particular perspective, and then creatively making useable, visual and wearable answers. Using her own family stories as a touchstone to move forward from, then focusing on the representation of national identity, the idea of indigenous pakeha and European settler guilt, Ciane has built a considered and provoking collection of works.

Working under the design nom-de-plume Ginger, Ciane Lawrey promotes the slow fashion movement, up-cycling pre-loved fashion, and creates individual one of a kind garments using nothing new. Encouraging people to think beyond fashion to strive to create individual expression through dress is another key component of Ciane’s philosophy.

Ciane Lawrey, has worn many hats, she has many accolades including New Zealand’s top hairdressing title, won New Zealand fashion awards, been in print internationally for both hair and makeup artistry and has been published nationally as fashion journalist.

‘Origins’ represents a maturing and extension of Ciane’s earlier work and interest individuals’ self-expression with a view to a harmonious nationhood.
