Windsurfers can travel at speeds up to 100kph. Slalom is the fastest form of windsurfer racing, with groups of sailors competing on a downwind zig-zag course around a series of buoys. Equipment is essentially unlimited, so sailors push the limits as hard as they dare. New Zealand has world ranking sailors in this discipline and some overseas competitors are also expected.

The venue in Dunedin harbour is well-suited for this event and provides plenty of places for spectators.

26 rounds counted (117 races) over 4 days with 1 round cancelled made for a great event with plenty of close sailing in high winds in the first 3 days. Gear breakage and injury were probably the most significant factors in determining the Open men result with very close finishes, often by a couple of metres, and even one dead heat. Roll on next year! Videos of the event are available http://windsurfingnz.org/content/driphone-2012-nz-windsurfing-slalom-nationals-video-promo-including-crash-day
