First concert of a series of three of Renaissance and Baroque Music
Featuring Loren Ludwig, with Robert Oliver, Polly Sussex; Kevin Wilkinson; Susan Alexander (viols) and Douglas Mews (chamber organ).
The first concert of the series presents a rare opportunity to hear a 5-part consort of viols live. This wonderful sound is possible thanks to the visiting lecturer at the NZSM, Loren Ludwig, who leads the consort of two trebles, two tenors and bass viols in music of 17th-century England, with Douglas Mews, organ.
Local players Robert Oliver, Susan Alexander and Kevin Wilkinson are joined by Polly Sussex from Auckland, in a programme of music by Simpson, Jenkins, Lawes, Lupo and Byrd. A feature will be movements from the ‘Months’, and the ‘Seasons’ by Christopher Simpson – scored for treble viol, two bass viols and organ. The programme also includes a bass viol duet by Simpson, and a fantasy suite for two treble viols, bass viol and Organ, by William Lawes.
