About the Matakana Sculpture Event:
The Matakana Sculpture Event is a sculpture symposium and exhibition held at Matakana Country Park, one hour north of Auckland. The event is a showcase of artists from across New Zealand that come to the park to make and exhibit sculpture in a variety of styles and materials.
About The Matakana Sculpture Event 2012:
The Matakana Sculpture Event 2012 will be held during January 2012 at the Matakana Country Park, and will host 5 sculptors from the Auckland region. The sculptors will start working on the pieces on the 4th of January, and finish on the 19th of January in time for the Bloom Family Festival (Jan 20th-22nd). The symposium will be followed by an exhibition at the Matakana Country Park until the Sunday of Auckland Anniversary Weekend (Jan 29th). All pieces at the symposium will be for sale.
Symposium:
The Matakana Sculpture Event is a sculpture symposium, where the public watch the artists as they create sculptures from stone and wood, and exhibit them for sale. This year we are hosting 5 sculptors from the Auckland region including two stone carvers and three wood carvers, with the potential for the artists to combine the materials.
The 2012 symposium artists are:
Peter Brierley-Millman - Puriri
Jenta Griffin - Pohutakawa
Richard Derbyshire - Macrocarpa
Allan Williams - Basalt
Glen Davis - Basalt
Matakana Country Park:
The Matakana Country Park is a 50 acre property nestled in the beautiful Omaha Flats area, surrounded by some of New Zealand’s top boutique wineries and cafés. The property has a 100 seat restaurant, a country style café, craft co-op, art gallery, local farmers market, miniature railway track, children’s playground, fitness centre, and equestrian centre. The park hosts other events such as the Bloom Family Festival, and the Highlife New Years Eve Party.
To get to Matakana Country Park, drive north of Auckland along State Highway 1 and turn off at Warkworth, follow the roadsigns to Matakana and Leigh, and drive straight through the roundabout at Matakana Village. The Matakana Country Park is about 2km's past Matakana Village.
