Folk and acoustic music is undoubtedly enjoying something of a renaissance, and County Durham singersongwriter Jez Lowe is among those thriving on this rebirth. He has a new album just out, his 15th set of original songs of the North Country, and the BBC’s "Radio Ballads" - to which he contributed twenty-odd songs won 2 Sony Radio Academy Awards. For the last twenty-five years, Jez has toured the world, building up a formidable reputation in the USA, Australia and Europe, and gaining the respect of his peers and his audience alike. Folk supremo Richard Thompson called him "the best songwriter to emerge from the UK in a long time", and his songs are among the most widely sung by folksingers and bands around the country’s clubs and festivals. His new album ‘Wotcheor’ is a not to the folk and music hall traditions of his native north-east England and has already received high praise from audiences and reviewers alike. His last album Northern Echoes won album of the year in the US as part of the Indie Acoustic Project Awards. The live double disc set that features 17 classic Jez Lowe songs recorded ‘Live on the Tyne’ with his full band, plus a ‘Song for Geordie’ DVD that mixes documentary and music footage from his tour of the same name in 2007 when Jez was nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards as ‘Folksinger of the Year’.

This year he is touring with fiddler, songwriter and singer Kate Bramley who is fast earning her own reputation on the UK folk scene following her debut solo CD ‘Little Canaan’. Described as ‘the impressive Kate Bramley’ by the national newspaper The Daily Telegraph Kate is steeped in the musical traditions of both the UK and America. Through her collaborations with US based band Sweetgrass as well as Jez Lowe’s Bad Pennies she has created an original repertoire of traditional and original songs and tunes that have made her one of the most sought after young performers on the UK scene.

‘Jez Lowe is one of our finest songwriters.’ BBC Radio 2
