“Jazz” is a very general term that encompasses more than thirty sub genre. This month we have two bands that will between them, present several of the most popular examples of jazz.
Starting the evening we have New Tricks from Rotorua making their first visit to the club. They describe themselves as being ‘versatile’. They are a five-piece group consisting of Keith Garratt - keyboard, Barry Smith - guitar/bass/banjo, Lyndsey Sinclair - vocals, Bill Blackbourn - drums and Peter Green -bass. They have all individually been entertaining New Zealanders for many years.
They will be followed by Lex Pistols. The band started in the 1980s, focusing mainly on dixie. Originally comprised only of lawyers and known as the "only legal jazz band in the country". The probable line-up will be John Geddes - sousaphone; Alistair McMillan - trombone, John Holmes - trumpet, Warwick Brown - clarinet, Bill McNickle - banjo - Jack McCulloch - drums and Brett Lowe - piano. When they played for us last in Hamilton, one of our members was reported as saying he thought he was back in New Orleans.
Held in Centennial Lounge.
