Join the festivities on the grassy banks, or the sandy beaches of Lake Pegasus. Following last season's fun, Aoraki Dragons bring you the 12-paddler version of the sport. Teams had so much fun in 2011, we just had to do it all again.

Aoraki want to encourage paddlers back into the boat after the New Year break. Many paddlers will still be with their families, lazing on the beach. But for those that are in town, we bring you the new concept to South Island dragon boating - the Super 12 format. Competitive racing, plus lots of fun races on Pegasus Lake.

Instead of the full crew of 22 in a boat, all you need are 12 paddlers (plus a sweep, and a caller). If you don't have a sweep, we can allocate one. Composite teams and casual paddlers are welcome. Just $5 per paddler (or caller/sweep) on the day.

The events on display will also be a little different. Plenty of fun races and chances for on-the-water glory.

Teams have a minimum of 10 paddlers, max of 12 paddlers. Plus a "Caller" and of course the "Sweep".

First Race is at 09:30am. They begin with 250 metre races, from half way down the lake to the just in front of the Swing Bridge (which is brilliant for viewing the action). Each team competes in Three heats, 4 races per heat, 3 to 4 boat per race.

Then teams will battle it out in the Tug of War.

Then beach-to-beach Le Mans races. Up to six heats, 3 to 4 boat per race. First across the line from each race proceeds to Semi Finals. Two semis, up to 3 boats in each. Winner of each Semi races in the final.
- Start-Runner sits on the path behind Aoraki Bay.
- On the hooter, the Start-Runner races to the boat, and the boat may have started at that same time.
- Start-Runner must be on the boat at the finish.
- Finish-Runner may not leave the boat till the bow has crossed the thick rope (which is on the beach to stop the boat scraping on the rough sand).
- First Finish-Runner across the line at the path wins.

Well a fantastic day's racing at Pegasus - dragon boating was the winner on the day...
Once again we <nearly> picked a good weather date for racing! Setup day on Saturday was a real scorcher, with Lake Pegasus buzzing with sail boats, multi-sport swimmers, kayaks, sunbathers and picnickers. But come Sunday the cloud cover cooled things down a few degrees. Luckily there was no drizzle or showers till at least 7pm so we got through all our on-the-water competition quite comfortably. For the safety and comfort of our paddlers, we have delayed the Tug of War till the Aoraki Open - so Waimak Attack hold their (land-based) title another four weeks.
Fantastc to be hosting Special guests "AeroDragons" from Long Beach, California (plus 3 Toronto Paddlers)!
Short results: 250m Sprint A Final - Super 12 Champions
    1 Tu Meke 2 1:12.87
    2 AeroDragons 1:12.95
    3 Waimak Attack 1:15.39
    4 Tu Meke 1:16.55

Le Mans Final - Super 12 Champions
    1 Sharian
    2 Tu Meke 2
    3 AeroDragons
