With Kevin McBride.
American Independence (1776) did not initially bring freedom to everyone in the USA. Indigenous Americans, slaves and women continued in their servitude. Here in NZ we do not even acknowledge, let alone celebrate our own Independence Day, 28 October 1835, when a number of Rangatira signed He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni (The Declaration of Independence), a critical forerunner to the Treaty of Waitangi, subsequently recognised by the British Crown and signed by many prominent Rangatira.
Self-determination of peoples, a key element in “independence”, is often met in NZ with us supporting or condoning its unjust denial, either consciously or not. Catholic Social Teaching has an emphasis on the dignity of the human person, and “liberation from every oppressive situation”, alongside calls to solidarity which focus on interdependence and the common good. What is the nature of our independence, what responsibilities are placed upon us who are blessed with freedom and independence and how can we fulfil them?
Kevin McBride is involved in justice and peace work. He has been involved with various peace and justice organisations including Conference of Churches in Aotearoa-NZ, Pax Christi, Just Housing Auckland and for the Auckland Catholic Diocese as a contracted bicultural worker.
