Once again Russell residents will don the dress and re-enact the time when this quaint little village was known as the Hell Hole of the Pacific!
Step into history with a wild and woolly weekend of fun in Russell when the Hell Hole of the Pacific again turns back time to 1830 -1847. For three days 27, 28, 29 January, the streets of Kororareka will come alive with characters like Captain Brind whose tales of love and loss blend with stories of the whalers from afar.
Meet our missionaries, gamblers, townspeople, temperance workers and flirtatious strumpets.
Visiting the Hell Hole for the first time is the illustrious William Hobson, Governor of New Zealand. Come meet the Honorable Governor as he is welcomed to our shore from the historic vessel the R Tucker Thompson and escorted to Pompallier
In honour of his arrival, everyone is invited to participate in the special Garden Party picnic on the grounds of Pompallier Mission which will be held on Saturday the 28th beginning about 4:00 pm. Bring a picnic, come prepared for fun and wonderful entertainment as the Hell Hole promises to be a weekend you will remember.
