Expect the truly weird and wonderful as cabaret meets drama meets acrobatics in Hanussen - The Palace of Burlesque, the play by The Loons, New Zealand’s one and only circus theatre company.
Since its inception in 2007, this Southern gem based in Lyttelton, Christchurch, has been wowing audiences around New Zealand and even as far away as London with its unique brand of performance combining the creative talent of singers, musicians, actors, aerialists and acrobats.
Their latest play, Hanussen, written by acclaimed author and Christchurch Press columnist Joe Bennett, is based on the fascinating true story of Erik Jan Hanussen. A variety theatre owner who lived in Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany, he became renowned for his abilities as a hypnotist, mentalist, occultist and astrologer. Even Hitler was impressed with his tips on performance and dramatic effect.
With a dynamic aerial set incorporating authentic 1930s film projection, the show is enhanced by live music, sumptuous costumes and thrilling circus feats. The atmosphere created will carry you through a range of eras, locations and emotions and is guaranteed to impress.
Hanussen will be heading to Auckland in early April and if the rave reviews from the South Island are anything to go by, you do not want to miss this.
