Triggered by the Pike River Mine disaster, the play takes the form of a wake held by a fictional family on the night of the explosion. The 'mail order' Russian wife of one of the miners arrives at the home of his father, who is dying of cancer. She has been drinking. Songs, heritage and life experiences are swapped as the grieving process takes place. The arrival of the educated son creates further tension. Add a district nurse and a teenage daughter and a rich drama of grief, laughter and stoicism unfolds. The performers are from a community-based group based in Greymouth and developed the play as their response to the Pike disaster.
The play features the songs of UK writer/composer, Helen Chadwick as well as popular songs and Russian folk songs. The script was written by Paul Maunder and the cast is made up of Maunder, Heather Fletcher, Jason Johnson, Freya Johnson and Corrina Gestro-Best.
