A special presentation by BBC film-maker Peter Crawford as a fundraiser in support of the R. Tucker Thompson Sail Training Trust.
Gannets nesting in the famous colony at Cape Kidnappers, on the east coast of New Zealand, just west of the international dateline, are the first creatures in the world to greet each new day. From here, this epic television safari follows the rising sun - through six continents and every time zone, through desert and rain forest and tundra, beneath the oceans and above the clouds - to witness some of the most spectacular landscapes and wildlife on our Planet Earth.
Photographed with the latest widescreen digital cameras, this unique broadcasting event follows the course of the sun as it heralds the dawn of a New Year around the globe. At this time of year, the extremes of north and south are at their most dramatic. In the Northern Hemisphere it is mid-winter - a time of survival; in contrast, the southern summer is a time of activity, courtship and the start of a new generation.
Peter Crawford, who conceived and produced this pioneering television programme recalls: "This is the kind of event that brings out the best in television: exotic places, compelling wildlife and knowledgeable presenters to guide and inform us.
"Global Sunrise was seen by millions of viewers around the world. It entertained and educated. It spoke volumes for the cause of conserving the diversity and vitality of our ‘lucky’ planet. For this reason - as well as its logistic and technical achievements - I am very proud of it."
With behind-the-scenes photographs and anecdotes, Peter Crawford will describe how he and his team mounted this ambitious television project - and how it helped to highlight some of the most successful nature conservation projects around the world.
Following his talk and an interval for a light meal, Peter Crawford will screen the complete 70 minute video of Global Sunrise - which starts and ends here in New Zealand.
Tickets include entry and screening, entrees and a light meal. A licensed cash bar will be available. All profits made from the event will go towards Youth Development voyages for Northland youth.
