Join us for the 2012 Japanese film evenings! All films are held at the University of Auckland and The University of Waikato. We hope that you will enjoy the films and gain a deeper insight into various aspects of Japanese society.

The Crying Wind (Director: Yoichi Higashi, 2004 ,106 min, rating TBA, drama)

The unhealed scars of World War II.

The story takes place on a small island near the main island of Okinawa, with many of the characters trying to come to terms with their past and present. On the cliff that skirts the shore of the small island sits an open-air burial ground containing the skull of a kamikaze pilot who was shot down during the last days of World-War II. When the wind blows through the bullet hole in the skull, it produces a whistling sound, revered by the inhabitants as the Crying Wind. The Crying Wind is based on a series of stories by Shun Medoruma, a prize-winning writer from Okinawa, who also wrote the screenplay and is directed by Higashi Yoichi.
