Finding Hope in the Darkest Places with Coline Divane & Hans Flapper.
We read in the Gospel where Jesus began his public ministry by reading from a scroll of Isaiah... "he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bend the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captive and release the prisoners." Being daily within the walls of our prison with hundreds of men serving their time, chaplains are so privileged for "today this scripture has been fulfilled in our hearing." Luke 4.21.
Incarceration can smother life, stripping one of their dignity and feeling so profoundly alienated and abandoned from family and friends and even God. Should there be someone to talk to, someone to tell how their life has crashed, how their dreams and hopes have faded, then there could be a glimmer of hope that all is not totally lost. Let us chaplains recount our experiences and share our daily encounters of the joys and sorrows from behind the locked doors of Paremoremo Prison.
