Faust Sonnengesang: German filmmaker Werner Fritsch

Te Puna Toi (Theatre and Film Studies, UC) in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut present a public showcasing of Faust Sonnengesang (Sun song) the latest film by visiting German filmmaker Werner Fritsch. Proclaimed by the German magazine Der Spiegel as “Germany’s boldest poet”, Fritsch will be present and will introduce and discuss scenes from his film.

Faust Sonnengesang is the journey of a German poet of today who starts where Goethe’s Faust ends. Fritsch asks “What film runs through the head of a human when they close their eyes forever?” Filmed all over the world in India, California, Egypt, New York, Germany, Norway, Nepal, Mexico and New Zealand, where he shot images during his previous stay in Christchurch and the South Island. Der Spiegel describes Faust Sonnengesang as a “hell-trip” featuring “Punk rock, drunken images, Bach choirs….a delirium of wild colours and idyllic nature, images of wonderful music and powerful lyrics….This film is pure madness” - Faust Sonnengesang should not disappoint.

Fritsch is here in Christchurch to film scenes for the second part of his epic and to attend the New Zealand premiere of his latest theatrical collaboration with the Free Theatre Christchurch, Hereafter. Fritsch collaborated with the Free Theatre on an earlier exploration of the Faust myth back in 2008 with the award winning Faust Chroma.
