History and history as fiction; how does a writer go about creating real historical characters in fiction and what does the writer owe them? Two recently published books; Stephanie Johnson's novel The Open World, and Peter Well’s recreation of the Colenso story, The Hungry Heart, ably demonstrate the dilemma. They will join forces on stage to share real historical characters in common and the practices they each bring to the subject under the questioning eye of Paula Green.
