Gallery Thirty Three’s aptly entitled Face... Paint?, while paying homage to one of the earliest fine art genres, clearly shows how much portraiture has evolved. It is a portraiture exhibition with a twist.
Essentially, all art is biographical and may be considered a portrait of sorts because it is a manifestation of an artist’s inner world and creativity. And as the works in this show demonstrate portraiture is not necessarily just about pictures of great-grandparents on the dimly lit walls of colonial homes. Gallery Thirty Three invited a number of their artists, including painters, sculptors and ceramicists to contribute a work which is their interpretation of what a self-portrait can be - hence the title Face... Paint? It may be a painted face, or it may not.
