Eion Stevens is a story-teller whose diverse pictorial sources include art house and mainstream cinema, poetry and prose, modern art, popular iconography, photojournalism, and the everydayness of life itself. He appropriates at will and any one composition may contain a number of contradictory or entirely unrelated references. Accumulatively, these disparate pictorial elements tell new stories; their origins are not necessarily a factor of the final narrative – and Stevens insists that every work, regardless of how pared-back and abstract it appears, is richly narrative.
His paintings are contemporary, graphic, boldly delineated and richly coloured.
