Now in its 9th year, the Echo Walking Festival is once again gearing up for a busy two weeks of walking, 10th April to 22 April.
The Lindemann Ridge Track enters the bush and climbs steeply up the ridge westwards. Higher up, the grade eases and further on the track starts to descend into the upper Wairoa Stream catchment. About few hours from the road the track passes an old Kauri dam. This is one of several Kauri dams that operated in the Wairoa catchment in the Kauri logging days of the early 1900s. Continuing westward for about 10 minutes brings you to a track junction. This is a pleasant open spot that gives excellent views over the Wairoa and Waitengaue valleys. To the northwest the Ananui Falls are clearly visible. A few minutes detour down the steep track to your right is a significant Kauri grove. The Pack Track leads you in a loop back to the road past the site of the old cookhouse of a logging camp.
You must be well prepared when tramping, especially on the longer day walks. Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.
