Rick Joy, originally from Maine, has lived and worked in the desert landscape of Arizona for over a decade. Guided by an abiding fascination with the desert’s capacity for sensory stimulation, and a commitment to functionality and craft that survives from his training and work as a contractor, Joy has developed a modern architecture that cultivates sensory experience, harmonies with the landscape, and eschews formal pretence. After graduating from architecture school at the University of Arizona and working several years for Will Bruder, Joy founded his own practice in Tuscon in 1993. He has completed many fine sensitive projects, among them his Avra Verde House, which attracted international acclaim.

Rick will be presenting the second Dulux Futuna lecture, the first of three in New Zealand. These lectures follow a one week master class in the Blue Mountains in NSW organised by the Architecture Foundation Australia and joined by Ric Leplastrier (the presenter of the inaugural Dulux Futuna lecture in 2011 at the Chapel's 50th anniversary), Peter Stutchbury and Lindsay Johnson.

The Architecture Foundation and the Futuna Trust have collaborated to bring Rick Joy to the Antipodes. Rick will join the Master Class in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and then present a series of Futuna Lectures in New Zealand as a follow on from the series of Futuna Lectures presented by Richard Leplastrier in 2011.

These lectures are made possible with the generous support of Dulux NZ, Metalcraft Roofing, Intergrain and New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA).

The Wellington lecture is sold out but there are still seats available for the Christchurch lecture Monday 19 March and Auckland on Thursday 22 March.

Assistance has also been provided by Ohtel and Riegers Copy Centre.
