Dr Don Bassett discusses the art produced during the Second Empire and Belle Epoque period, in particular, how the paintings of this time reflect the modernisation of Paris by Hausmann and the attempts by artists to escape from this.

Dr Bassett is an Honorary Research Fellow and former Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland's Department of Art History.
