Every Tuesday you will see Conservation Volunteers out and about at different parks around Auckland. It’s part of an initiative between Conservation Volunteers New Zealand and the Auckland Council to help bring biodiversity back to our central parks and to give people who are interested in conservation a chance to get involved.
The programme runs every Tuesday and volunteers get to experience a variety of parks all around Auckland. The projects coming up range from potting up flax and laying out pest control stations at different sites around Mt Eden, planting to restore the health of the Whau River, installing wind protection around new seedlings and laying mulch at Waiatarua Reserve to planting native seedlings alongside Oakley Creek.
Conservation Volunteers NZ's experienced team leader, Wendy John, guides the programme and aims to teach volunteers about all aspects of conservation, including plant identification and planting techniques.
Wendy John says “Each park has its own special characteristics, plants and wildlife and the conservation challenges for each area are very varied, so it’s a great chance for volunteers to learn about biodiversity and how we can all make a difference to our environment.”
Every Tuesday at 8am volunteers meet at Conservation Volunteers office in Mt Eden and are then transported to the week’s chosen park. Gloves and all tools and are provided. Volunteers just need to bring their lunch, a raincoat and sturdy footwear.
If you are interested in getting involved please call Fiona at Conservation Volunteers New Zealand on 0800 56 76 86 or email info@conservationvolunteers.co.nz. Conservation Volunteers New Zealand runs a diverse range of conservation projects throughout New Zealand and you can check these out on their website at www.conservationvolunteers.co.nz.
