Vincent Minnelli's 1956 filmed biography of Vincent van Gogh was adapted by Norman Corwin from the best-selling novel by Irving Stone, which was in turn was inspired by the written correspondence between Van Gogh and his brother Theo. Nearly 200 of Van Gogh's original paintings were borrowed from private collections for the film.
Kirk Douglas plays van Gogh and received a Golden Globe award as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Anthony Quinn plays Gauguin and was awarded an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film was also nominated for Best Art - Set Direction and Best Screenplay.
With James Donald, Everett Sloane and Lionel Jeffries.
