Poneke Trio - Dumky
The popular ‘Dumky’ Piano Trio of 1891 was composed just before Dvořák left Bohemia to take up a post in New York. It was published in his absence, and proofread by Dvořák’s close friend, Johannes Brahms, who possibly made some minor changes. Written nine years earlier, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C, is a mature work by a composer who had already composed a large catalogue of chamber music. The Hungarian composer and cellist, Zoltán Kodály, wrote his Duo for Violin and Cello during the First World War and it features the phrasing and inflections of his native Magyar folk music.
The recently formed Poneke Trio brings together three well-known chamber musicians, Anna van der Zee (violin), Paul Mitchell (cello) and pianist Richard Mapp, a regular contributor to Classical Expressions.
