Wellington band City Oh Sigh comes to Paekakariki in July for one show only.
Traipsing up the coast, they will be bringing with them (strapped to their backs) a cello, rhodes piano, guitar, trumpet and a little bit of a drum kit. After setting up and standing around admiring the beautiful St Peter's Hall (there are tables so it's kind of cabaret style! And it's byo!) they will stand around drinking a beer with their friends Hula Hope and French for Rabbits, who are also playing that night.
City oh Sigh play slightly folky, minimilist pop. Sometimes when they get carried away, it's not minimalist. You can consider those particular songs as the 'apogee' of the set list if you like. The band have been hiding away rehearsing in Wellington for awhile, so this gig will include a few new songs they've been working on. In case you didn't know, they have a fancy new jazz drummer playing with them now. Who is amazing.
Hula Hope writes folk-pop about things like abandoned villages and charming men, and is also quite, quite charming herself.
French for Rabbits is is a sweet and dreamy, nautically themed duo also from Wellington. Their gigs are hushed. You will be enchanted, for many days afterwards.
Convinced? Wondering where Paekakariki is? And how to get there? Catch a train there from Wellington!
It's actually remarkably easy to have a folk pop evening out of the city:
Just catch the 7:14pm train from Wellington station - you'll get to Paekakariki right on 8pm. Then, either catch the 10:13pm or 11:13pm (last) train back to Wellington.
