Local Chris Currie is the next Collector In the Community exhibition with his Ship in a Bottle collection.
Chris was a late starter to sailing, but had always had a keen interest in boats and all related boat paraphernalia. His great great great grandfather was a captain of one of the immigrant ships that brought people to settle New Zealand so Chris’s interest in all things nautical likely stems from that.
In 2011 Chris was gifted a beautiful little bottle made for him by a glass-blowing friend. This little bottle prompted Chris to try the ancient art of building miniature ships in bottles. At 84 years of age Chris’s father did his first ever watercolour of a mullet boat on the Auckland harbour, so Chris used this painting as the inspiration for his first ever ship in a bottle.
Originally he just wanted to complete one ship, but 8 ships later Chris is hooked!
This Collector In The Community exhibition showcases several of Chris Currie’s ships as well as some specially loaned for the occasion.
Held in the Upper Foyer.
Rotorua residents with relevant ID are free of charge.
