From the all black uniforms of our sports teams to that icon of Kiwiana, the black singlet, black is the colour most commonly associated with New Zealand identity. This pop-up exhibition explores the subject of how and why black has become part of our proud identity as New Zealanders through garments that span a 120 year period.

Black in Fashion features a range of New Zealand fashion objects and garments - including those by leading designers, a c1890 Victorian dress and leather jacket from the film Once Were Warriors - enlivened by narrative, music and film.

A series of events will be hosted throughout the exhibition, including a Curator's floor talk (12noon, Friday 24th February), a debate on the topic Do we wear too much black? moderated by Dr Prudence Stone (6 to 8pm, Wednesday 7 March), and a book launch and panel discussion (4.30 to 6 pm, Monday 12th March).

There will also be a Best in Black competition designed to find the best dressed male and female wearing black (Friday 24 February to Sunday 4 March, 6pm). Open to all ages, visitors to the exhibition are invited to come dressed in black and have their photo taken with a panel of judges selecting the winners.

Part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival, this exhibition is presented by the New Zealand Fashion Museum in association with the Museum of Wellington City & Sea.

Black in Fashion will be housed in the Tower building located at 1 Brandon Street.

Koha entry.
