Work, love and life are one hard slog for the fish-filleting foursome Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda. Their luck changes however when Linda finds tickets to Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot in York. Out go the hairnets and overalls as the girls do themselves up and head for the races. As the day unfolds, the champagne flows, secrets spill out and their luck changes in this great day out for all the ladies (and the gents too!).
List of characters - funny, poignant familiar characters – 4 strong female roles
Pearl; female, mid 50’s. A fish packer. Staunch and tough with a rather large secret
Jan: female, mid 40’s. A fish packer. Fragile beneath a tough sheen
Shelley: female, mid 20’s. A fish packer. Wannabe celebrity or a brassy would be star
Linda: female, mid 20’s. A fish packer. Innocent, naïve, shy, mousy and young. Has an all-consuming passion for Tony Christie.
Could be played by one versatile actor or two versatile actors or three different actors.
Joe – the girls' supervisor – 40ish
Fred – ticket tout – obnoxious, any age
Jim – a TV pundit – cheeky - any age
Patrick – an Irish jockey – weary of life as a jockey, 30ish-40ish
Kevin – a gambler passing by – any age
Barry: Pearl’s lover and a bookie – 50ish
