Copland - Appalachian Spring;
Gershwin - Porgy & Bess: Symphonic Picture (arr. Robert Russell Bennett).
Music Director Eckehard Stier presides over a concert that contains some of his personal musical favourites.
Der Gerettete Alberich provides a brilliant showcase for percussionist extraordinaire Dame Evelyn Glennie, in this rare opportunity to hear her perform in New Zealand.
More sedate but equally engaging is Copland’s Appalachian Spring. This musically nostalgic evocation of the pioneer-on-the-prairie dream, including the catchy shaker tune ‘Lord of the Dance’, stands unchallenged as a symbol of all that America stands for.
“The percussion soloist is the shaman and it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to conjure more musical magic on stage than Dame Evelyn Glennie. She moves with an arresting combination of force and grace.” - The Star.com
