The speaker for our May meeting is Professor John Boys.

Professor John Boys talks to us about the latest developments in Inductive Power Transfer technology. As this technology comes of age it is amazing the creativity of its applications. Imagine if you can yourself riding in an electric intercity bus, cruising effortlessly along the motorway. The bus changes to a lane painted with green and black chevrons. Nothing changes on the bus, you're still at cruising speed. After a couple of kilometres the bus flashes under a gantry festooned with cameras, then merges back into the traffic as the chevron lane ends. A young lad explains to his mum that they have just recharged the batteries on the bus, that the bus has a special pickup underneath that hovers 400mm above the road surface which has a special coil laid beneath the tarmac. The power is transferred without contact. A flight of fancy? This technology is out there now.
