The Top Energy Northern Crossing is a coast-to-coast multi-sport race from the Hokianga harbour to the Kerikeri basin, and has the potential to become a major fixture on Northland's sporting calendar. This charity event is organised by the Kerikeri Rotary Club with the proceeds going the the Northland Rescue Helicopter and community youth programmes.
Individuals and teams competing in the challenge will run 9km from South Head to Opononi, kayak 18km to Rawene, cycle 71km to Waipapa via Kaikohe and run 8km to the Stone Store. There is also a duathlon course that is: run 9km/cycle 82km/run 8km.
Routing the challenge through some of New Zealand’s most historic landscapes adds to its appeal and gives it a point of difference over other multi-sport challenges. "We thought going from where Kupe landed to where the missionaries landed had quite a good story behind it."
