J.B. Priestley's class thriller with a social conscience.
Combining the theatrical excitement of a detective thriller with the deeper probing of social malaise, this is a play that holds you in the twists and turns of the moment while leaving a lasting impression.
Set in 1912 when the privileged classes were oblivious to the “fire and anguish” that was to come with the First World War, the play opens in the joviality of a family party. The Birlings are celebrating the engagement of their daughter to a young man of high social position, and the promise of increased prosperity that the match will bring. Then there is an interruption. A police inspector arrives seeking information on the death of a young woman who is seemingly unknown to each member of the family. But gradually, and with uncanny skill, the Inspector uncovers a series of devastating connections.
Repertory is privileged to be able to present Priestley’s time-honoured masterpiece in the beautiful, historic ambience of St. Michael and All Angels' Church, corner of Oxford Terrace and Durham Street.
No shows Sunday or Wednesday.
Bookings phone (03) 379-8866 or book online at the website. Door sales available.
