Prizewinning and Booker-nominated Irish novelist, playwright and poet, Sebastian Barry has kept company with Lilly, the main character of his new novel On Canaan’s Side (2011), since 1993 when she featured in his play The Steward of Christendom (1995).
Following on from highly acclaimed earlier novels A Long Long Way (2005) and The Secret Scripture (2008), On Canaan’s Side spans 70 years of Irish and American history and has won accolades around the world for both the beauty of its writing and the eloquence of its storytelling.
Barry speaks with Irish literature expert Jan Cronin about his writing life.
