The removal of General McChrystal as Troop Commander in Afghanistan was directly attributable to a Rolling Stone feature ‘The Runaway General’ penned by contributing editor Michael Hastings and for which he won the 2011 George Polk Award in journalism.
In his Rolling Stone role, Hastings regularly covers politics and international affairs including the wars in Iran, Afghanistan and Libya.
His new book The Operators (2012) examines the inside story of America’s war in Afghanistan and he has also recently written a major profile of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
Michael Hastings is in conversation with Guardian journalist and New Zealand Listener columnist Toby Manhire.
Supported by Hachette.
