Tomorrow two New Zealanders will be executed. Minnie Dean, infamous Winton 'baby farmer' who was hanged for infanticide, and Victor Spencer, young World War One deserter from Bluff, seek redemption and clemency. Did their societies get it wrong? Is the death penalty a one-size-fits-all solution to crime and punishment? Should they die at the hands of the state? And if you knew the truth, would you pull the trigger on the gun or gallows? A provocative play, A Cry Too Far From Heaven examines the human realities of individuals facing capital punishment.
Written and performed by Angela Newell, Jade Gillies and Lizzie Dawson.
This performance is a fundraiser to help cover the costs of taking this Southland-based performance to the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. There will also be a raffle on the night.
The play focuses on executions, so may not be suitable for children.
