The gifts of harakeke (flax), kiekie (native vine) and other materials drawn from Papatuanuku and the natural environment speak their own unique language; so redolent with stories.
In association with Taniwharau o Tainui and Korari Collaborations, Auckland Museum hosts weavers from Tainui, Ngati Whatua and Te Hikutu to enliven the collections on display in Maori court. Through demonstrations and displays, visitors will be engaged in the processes and stories of the art of weaving and how these wahine uphold the skills of their ancestors as contemporary practitioners.
"Weaving is more than just a product of manual skills. From the simple rourou food basket to the prestigious kahu kiwi [kiwi feather cloak], weaving is endowed with the very essence of the spiritual values of Maori people. The ancient Polynesian belief is that the artist is a vehicle through whom the gods create."
- Erenora Puketapu-Hetet 1989.
