The most acrobatic and versatile windsurfing discipline. It is the “youth blood” and has been responsible for much of the new talent that has come into the sport in recent years. The winner is the sailor who does the most exciting and skilful manoeuvres. The conditions are from flat water in a lake and a slight breeze to stormy winds.

The complicated turns, jumps and rotations which are shown in a freestyle competition make this exciting to watch and it inspires young people into the sport. Windsurfing is developing through freestyle. Years ago, only a hand full of windsurfers were able to do some kinds of manoeuvres. Today it is standard for the freestylers to know them and to constantly come up with new moves and combinations.

Normally two to four sailors compete in the knock-out system in heats (certain period of time) in which the judges count the best action on the water.

This is probably the most spectator-friendly form of windsurfing, with the action taking place close to the shore in a specified area.

Like many windsurfing events, the venue will be dependent on wind conditions on the day. More details on the event will be published on the website.

Windsurfing New Zealand 6 months ago

All the way up from Wellington came Tim Haxell, Eric Torvelainen and Robert Harrison, greeted by the local Auckland freestyle scene, sunny blue sky and a building SW breeze.

Similar to last year the entry numbers allowed a double elimination to get as many heats as possible and give everyone a chance to come back after loosing a heat.

The heats were highlighted by Grubby’s, Flaka’s, loops, spocks, spock 540 clew first and one handed. Clew first Spock 540, several flakas, flaka 720’s and a nicely landed spinloops.

In the end it came down to Thomas and Tim, but Thomas, not completely recovered from an injury conceded the title he held from last year to Tim.

Sponsors Roders Dental, WSP and A’ND Distribution.

Big thanks to all the helpers from the AWA, the time, the boat and of course the sponsors!
