The Waiata and the Word troupe will be releasing their album “This I” at their favourite local venue Lembas Café in Raumati South. The 7 piece troupe will be playing material from the album.
Waiata and the Word is a seven-piece Kapiti Coast-based music and spoken word troupe who present a unique cabaret-type show in a highly-entertaining way. Musical styles range from jazz and rock to reggae and folk, with original songs by Troy Hunt (guitar, vocals), Phill Simmonds (mandolin, vocals), Sigrid Woolloff (guitar, vocals), Nigel Patterson (trumpet, clarinet, harmonica, tin whistle, harmonica, vocals), Paul “Boggy” Bognuda (saxophone, vocals), Lindsay Rabbitt (spoken word), anchored by Tim Jaray (bass).
The troupe’s debut album This “I” (dedicated to musician friend and noted environmentalist Leon Kiel who passed away in 2009) takes its title from a quatrain by 13th century Persian poet and mystic Rumi and in part pays homage to The Beat poets and the father America poetry Walt Whitman, alongside takes of what it means to be human in the 21st century.
The Gig will be part of a historic spoken word/music fusion double album release. Featuring Auckland's Freaky Meat and Wellington's Waiata and the Word.
So get to Lembas for the Waiata and the Word gig and then join them as they head to the Waterfront to check out the cool cats outta Auckland, Freaky Meat…
